WHAT IS AN ORGANIC COMMUNITY?
To understand what we mean by “organic community“ there must first be an understanding of what it means to be “organic.“ This term is most often associated with crops and farming. Organic farming is complex and not easily defined. It emphasizes a holistic approach to food growth, harvesting, preparation and transportation, or sending out. Only natural resources are used for growth and sustainability, and appropriate land management is emphasized with nothing man-made used for crop growth or protection. Protection comes from natural tending. This method is not only more humane, but is also better for the environment.
So what is an organic community?
It is an expression of the Body of Christ - the Church - using only natural resources (the love of God, Jesus as the “head“, the Word of God, the gifts of the Spirit, and functioning members of the body) for:
- Growth
- Harvesting (this done in the field, not the barn.)
- Preparation (discipleship/mentoring/training)
- Sending out
- Protection
Like organic farming, the explanation of organic communities within Christ’s Church is not easily defined. However, the experience is rich and healthy and full of life-giving spiritual nutrients, humane and very good for the environment!
One more aspect of organics is that they spoil more easily than those with added preservatives; therefore, staying “fresh“ requires living each day in the newness of Christ and His revelation for today.
